Lens breathing compensation

Lens breathing refers to a shifting of the angle of view or focal length of a lens when the focus changes.

You can use the Catalyst Prepare Plugin Lens Breathing Compensation controls to use metadata from clips to compensate for the effect of lens breathing.

For information about supported cameras, please visit https://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/cpplugin/l/index.php.

This feature is not available in all regions.

Lens breathing compensation is not available for clips on FTP devices, XDCAM Station volumes via CIFS, XDCAM decks, XDCAM Drive units, or Optical Disc Archive volumes.

For information about camera settings for enabling compensation using metadata, please visit https://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/cpplugin/l/index.php.

Lens breathing compensation is not supported when changing camera settings or detaching the lens during clip recording.

If no network connection is available to confirm the Catalyst Prepare Plugin license, stabilization and lens breathing compensation output will contain a watermark.

  1. Select the clip in the Source Monitor window.

  2. Select the Effect Controls window. The Catalyst Prepare Plugin controls are displayed.

  3. Expand the Stabilization & Lens Breathing controls.

  4. Click the Analyze button to analyze the selected clip and update the preview to show the stabilized clip.

After analysis, the Output summary section displays the corrected crop resolution.

  5. Expand the Lens Breathing Compensation controls.

  6. Select the Apply check box to enable lens breathing compensation controls.

When the check box is cleared, the Catalyst Prepare Plugin will not compensate for lens breathing. If the clip includes in-camera breathing compensation, it will be preserved.

  7. Choose a Correction mode setting to compensate for lens breathing:

    • Select Auto to adjust cropping automatically.

      Item

      Description

      Maximum cropping amount

Drag the slider to set the amount of cropping that can be applied to compensate for lens breathing.

When correcting a clip using a setting that is too large, clips with significant lens breathing may exhibit a black border around the frame. We recommend using a setting that is close to the default cropping amount value in manual mode. To check the default manual cropping amount, choose Manual mode and check the Cropping amount slider.

      Corrected crop resolution

Displays the dimensions of the frame after cropping is applied.

If source clips captured with Active image stabilization mode exhibit blurring when using Auto mode, choose Manual mode and decrease the Cropping amount setting.

    • Select Manual if you want to adjust compensation settings.

Drag the slider to set the maximum amount of cropping that is applied to compensate for lens breathing.

When correcting a clip using a Cropping amount setting larger than the default value, clips with significant lens breathing may exhibit a black border around the frame. We recommend using a Cropping amount setting that is close to the default value. You can double-click the slider handle to reset the setting to its default.

      Corrected crop resolution

Displays the dimensions of the frame after cropping is applied.

In some cases, Catalyst Prepare Plugin lens breathing compensation can be less effective than in-camera lens breathing compensation if stabilization is also enabled. Use the Preview pane to compare the original and corrected clip. You can clear the Apply check boxes for Stabilization or Lens Breathing Compensation as needed before exporting the corrected clip.
