Herb Alpert
Herb Alpert "Rewhipped" remix
One of the most celebrated albums of the 60s-both for its music and its sexy album cover-was Herb Alpert's Whipped Cream & Other Delights. Revisited by some of today's top remixers, the album is now available as Whipped Cream & Other Delights Rewhipped. Featuring remixers such as John King (of the Dust Brothers), Thievery Corporation, and Medeski, Martin & Wood, and others, it's a decidedly new take on an established classic.

Shout! Factory, ACIDplanet.com®, and Sony Creative Software have joined forces to bring you the Herb Alpert Rewhipped remix event. Herb Alpert has re-recorded his solo to "Butterball" exclusively for this contest. This is some brand-spanking-new blowin' that's sure to perk up your ears. In addition, the original loops for the remix contest are new, unreleased samples-teasers of the hot stuff coming with ACID Pro 6.

The winner of this contest will receive nearly $2,000 in prizes including a Sony® Walkman Bean™ MP3 player, ACID® Pro 6 software, Sound Forge® 8 software, loop libraries, a copy of the Whipped Cream & Other Delights Rewhipped CD, plus all 11 CDs in the Herb Alpert Signature Series from Shout! Factory.

ACID Pro: The soundtrack machine
by Craig Anderton

Some people wonder why I'm writing for this newsletter when I have no affiliation with Sony. Well, it's because I really exploit their software! I've already mentioned how Vegas software gave me a video career, but I haven't yet told the story of how ACID Pro software gave me a film scoring career.

My neighbors, who distribute videos, had a problem: They were contractually obligated to deliver a video, but the guy doing the score had joined a lucrative rock band reunion tour. Did I know anyone who could do a soundtrack on short notice? I said I could, but when they told me their budget and how much music they needed, I realized I was going to make about $5 an hour-unless I found a more efficient way to put music together...

To make a long story short: ACID Pro to the rescue. I found out it's a great tool for doing soundtracks, and here are some reasons why.

Easy tempo changes. A lot of times you need to "fudge" the soundtrack's tempo so that the music matches up with the visuals. ACID Pro makes it easy to insert tempo changes to gradually speed up and slow down the tempo so that musical "hits" fall in the right places. Even better, the "Adjust Tempo to Match Cursor to Marker" command is amazing. Place the cursor at a place where the music is supposed to correlate to the visuals, place a marker at the visual cue, invoke this command, and the tempo stretches so that the cursor lines up with the market. It's kind of like magic. Continued

ACID goes to the Grammys!
Ted Perlman has been a well-known figure in the music industry for years. He has worked as a producer, an arranger, a programmer, an engineer, and a musician with the biggest names in the business. Recently, his work on Burt Bacharach's "At This Time" helped secure the "Best Pop Instrumental Album of the Year" Grammy® for the CD. "It's a fantastic CD, and I'm proud to have been a part of it!" raves Perlman.

Ted Perlman"It started about a year and a half ago. Dr. Dre gave Burt all these drum loops, Burt gave me the loops, and we started working on it. Burt started writing songs around the loop, which was pretty cool, and then it worked its way up from there." Perlman used ACID Pro software to clean up and augment the beats from Dr. Dre. "A lot of times I'll just go into ACID and set the tempo. I start adding bass things and looking for weird little effects. I have the entire Sony library for ACID."

Perlman and his wife, the vocalist Peggi Blu, live in Los Angeles. The long list of performers that Perlman has worked with includes Bob Dylan, Elton John, Neil Sedaka, Carole King, Jonathan Richman, Leonard Cohen, Dolly Parton, Stephanie Mills, Whitney Houston, and many, many others.

What you need to know about digital media and copyright law
by Matthew D. Sarrel

In 2003, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) filed lawsuits against 261 peer-to-peer file sharing users for illegally downloading copyrighted music. Prior to these lawsuits, P2P file sharing was tremendously popular. Now many P2P clients have been shut down, but opportunities to download digital music, images and video continue to abound.

The first bit of advice is to err on the side of caution. If you don't know whether something is copyright protected or not, it is best to assume that it is. Uploading or downloading works protected by copyright without the authority of the copyright owner is an infringement of the copyright owner's exclusive rights of reproduction and/or distribution. By violating these rights, intentionally or not, you may be liable for statutory damages up to $30,000 for each work infringed. If the copyrighter can prove willful infringement, meaning you intentionally broke the law, that amount may be increased up to $150,000 for each work infringed. In addition, you may also be liable for any attorney fees incurred by the copyright owner to enforce his or her rights.

Since the files distributed over peer-to-peer networks may be copyrighted works, there is a risk of liability when you download material from these networks. To avoid these risks, there are currently many authorized services on the Internet that you can use to purchase copyrighted works online such as music, e-books, and motion pictures. There are also many sources for purchasing royalty-free media and content such as music loops that you can use in your music remixes and video projects. By purchasing works through authorized services, you can get the content you want and at the same time avoid the risks of infringement liability and limit your exposure to other potential hazards including viruses, unexpected material, or spyware.
