CRAIG'S CORNER
Needledrop for the 21st Century by Craig Anderton
Everything seems to go better with music: Films, commercials, industrial kiosks, you name it. But not everyone can hire Hans Zimmer, which is why royalty-free libraries of stock music have saved many a local weather broadcast, car dealership, and theater group. This was once called "needledrop music" because the material came on LPs, and you "dropped the needle" until you found appropriate music. But hey, it's the 21st century—we can do better. Craig Anderton has released three loop libraries, written over 20 books on music technology, and remains active as a performer with the German group Rei$$dorf Force. Check out his Web site at http://www.craiganderton.com.

USER PROFILE: Filmmaker James Manning
James Manning's short film Queen of Spades tells the story of two savvy "Hearts" players with a passion for cards and an endless appetite to win at any cost. Manning wrote and directed the film, which stars his wife, professional actress and dancer Shely Pack-Manning. Queen of Spades was captured and edited using Vegas software, and the musical score was created using ACID Pro software.

Manning said that using Sony creative software allowed him not only to write, direct, and act in the film, but edit and score it as well. In Manning's words, "Sony technology allowed us to achieve our goal which was to hold the attention of the audience for 21 minutes while telling the story of a simple game of hearts." Queen of Spades was shown at the 2004 California Independent Film Festival. [continued]
ACID PRO TIP: tagging existing loops
The new Media Manager in ACID Pro 5 software just keeps getting deeper and more powerful every time you use it. As you come to understand the tool more fully, you'll also come to appreciate the phenomenal difference it can make in your workflow.

"Great," we often hear customers say, "but where do I start? I mean, I've got thousands of files in my media collection, and most of them were created long before the concept of tagging came along. So how does the Media Manager help me? I certainly don't have time to go back into my collection and one-by-one, add tags to every individual file!"

Here's exactly where the Media Manager window-along with the Sony Sound Series Loops and Samples reference library shines. We've already tagged all of the files in the Sony media collections and included those tags in the reference library. Now all you have to do is to transfer those tags from the reference library to your older Sony media files. The procedure is simple. [continued]
